This summer the Honolulu Academy of Arts is home to Asian Sensation—three exhibitions of contemporary art, film festivals,concerts and performances.

Don't miss:
Shu: Reinventing the Book in Contemporary Chinese Art, which includes work by art superstars Xu Bing and Cai Guo-Qiang, who is the visual wizard behind the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. The exhibition is a moving testament to the effects of the Cultural Revolution.

One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now, a survey of artists from across the country who claim at least one parent of Asian heritage, whether it be Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, Iranian, Korean or Filipino. Included in the show is work by Bay area artist Michael Arcega who will be artist in residence at The Contemporary Museum next year, and Mika Tajima, who was included in this year's Whitney Biennial. 

Leland Miyano: Historia Naturalia et Artificialia, by Kahalu‘u-based artist and landscape designer Leland Miyano. This three-part installation is a thought-provoking meditation on the environment and Hawai‘i.

The museum is closed Mondays.

Hosted by Kealoha, First Thursdays is the largest registered poetry slam in the world (with 650+ in attendance).

First Thursdays continues its 'no rules' summer with another quality show on August 7th. All team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc. are ALLOWED. However, the 3 minute time rule will still remain in effect.

The special feature for this show is Makana.  As always, the night will feature live painters, massages in the lounge, and a guest DJ providing turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

First Thursdays offers $$100 in cash prizes to the winner, and features Hawaii's best performance poets, live musicians, MC's, and live painters.  In addition, featured DJ's offer up turntable bliss to keep the night flowing smoothly.

To fulfill the promise of his transformation from idle youth to new-crowned king, Henry launches a war to reclaim France for England. Featuring some of Shakespeare’s most stirring speeches and culminating in the famous battle of Agincourt where the French outnumbered the English five to one. The all-female cast stars Elizabeth Wolfe as Henry and Erin SuJan Kim as Chorus and features original music by Damned Spot Drums.
