The inspiration for REED SPACE HONOLULU is Interisland Terminal's desire to see a return of independent bookshops in Honolulu featuring thoughtfully selected titles to nurture the intellect and creative capital of this community.  Renowned graphic designer and brand developer jeffstaple (www.stapledesign.com) will curate the bookstore's selection of art, architecture and design books.

Biography

Jeffrey Ng aka jeffstaple

Jeffrey Ng aka jeffstaple, 33, has masterfully created a world of communicating through design. The founder and owner of Staple Design, Staple Clothing and Reed Space, Jeff is a graphic, web and clothing designer, artist, DJ, writer and entrepreneur.

Born in New Jersey, Jeff attended New York University to study journalism. While in college, he worked as an entry-level data clerk at a design firm. Jeff quickly learned and eventually became a class instructor at the firm in less than 6 months. He then realized his growing passion for graphic design, dropped out of NYU and enrolled himself at Parsons School of Design in Fall 1995 to study Communications Design. 

His first break happened in 1997, when Jeff walked into the Triple Five Soul boutique in SoHo wearing a hand-printed Staple t-shirt. The manager took notice and placed the first ever order of 12 T-shirts from the line. With Staple’s door officially open for business, Jeff successfully turned his one man T-shirt business into a mens collection as well as a full-service design firm; opening Staple Design that year and his own retail store/art gallery, Reed Space, in 2002.

Staying very firmly grounded to the values in which the Staple brand was created–sticking to the basic necessities needed in life, Staple Design has also created work for Burton Snowboards, Converse, The Gap, HBO, Housing Works, Levi’s, LVMH, New Balance, New Museum of Contemporary Art, Nike, NYC&Co., Puma, Timberland, Uniqlo and more.

A tradition in Japan and Hawaii every Friday and Saturday, July 16 - August 28.

WAIKIKI - Come and enjoy the summer season with the Natsu Matsuri (Summer Festival) at the Pacific Beach Hotel every Friday and Saturday evening across from Waikiki Beach from July 16 through August 28, 2010. The Japanese celebration will feature food, children's games, entertainment and traditional bon dancing and music. Everyone is invited with no admission.

Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with yatai (food booth) and yomise (games & toys) available to guests, kama'aina and visitors. Every evening will feature the showcasing of local bon dance groups at 6:30 p.m. and guests are invited to join the circle of bon dance. Traditional Japanese dishes will be sold including okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancakes), yakisoba (fried noodles) and cold udon noodles.

For over 50 years, Dr. Michel Odent has been a driving force behind the worldwide movement to normalize childbirth.

He is the author of 11 books in 21 languages on pregnancy, labor, birth, breastfeeding, oxytocin and love. Home birth-like settings and the popularity of water birth are attributed to his influences.

Dr. Odent founded the Primal Health Research Centre (London) testing the assumption that human health is shaped during the primal period: fetal life, the perinatal period and the first year of life. He has appeared in documentaries and films including 'Birth Reborn' and 'The Business of Being Born'.

He is bringing a global symposium to Hawaii in 2012 and will be speaking Saturday morning, July 31st, about this future international event as well as the topic: 'Childbirth: Reasons for Optimism'.

KEIKI BON DANCE EVENT

AT THE CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY CENTER

Honolulu, Hawaii – On Saturday, July 31^st from 10:30 – 12:00 the Children’s Discovery Center will host a bon dance especially for keiki and their families. If you’ve never been to a bon dance, this is the perfect setting to learn, and if you are a bon dance expert, come and join the fun! Festivities will be led by members of the Honpa Hongwanji group and will include dances especially for children, such as the Pokemon Ondo.

Learn child-friendly bon dances & participate in this special Japanese tradition
Make Hachimaki (Japanese headbands) and Uchiwa (Japanese fans):
Enjoy bon dance treats such as shave ice cakes and fried noodles (cost):

Our Keiki Bon Dance is part of a series of cultural celebrations themed in conjunction with our current traveling exhibit Torn From Home: My Life as a Refugee. The exhibit and these cultural celebrations are designed to give children the opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity in our Islands and to gain timely information on global migration and immigration. 

The Hawaii Children's Discovery Center is a world-class children's museum filled with hands-on, interactive exhibits where children can learn about themselves and the world beyond our island shores. It opened in its current location in 1998 and has become a special place for Hawaii's families to play, discover and learn together.

Located at 111 Ohe Street in downtown Honolulu, the Center is open on Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 1pm and on Saturday to Sunday from 10am to 3pm. General admission is $$10 per person. It will be a double feature Madagascar 1 and Madagascar 2. Lokahi will be setting up their jumper and keiki zone as well from 5pm – 7:30pm.

It's a double feature drive in movie!

Watch Madagascar 1 and Madagascar 2 - Escape 2 Africa on Saturday, July 31st, 2010 under the stars in our open air drive-in movie starting at dusk.

Lokahi will also be hosting their Back to School drive along with their keiki bouncer from 5:30p - 7:30p!

Sound for the movie will be transmitted over a FM radio station. Attendees are encouraged to bring a portable FM radio to avoid draining the car battery. Open air seating will be available at the front of the screen, so be sure to pack your beach mats and chairs. Tailgating with barbecues and alcohol will not be allowed during this family inspired event. Centerplate will be providing a variety of snacks and drinks via the snack bar.

On July 31st we are hosting a Fundraiser at “The Venue”, Honolulu’s newest performance space in the heart of the Art’s District. The event will be a visual wonder of Art, Movement and Dance with some of Hawaii’s leading musicians collaborating to support our mission. We hope to evoke awareness and social responsibility for programs against Domestic Violence here in the Islands.

Rolando Sanchez: singer, songwriter, percussionist, recording artist and producer born in Masaya , Nicaragua , Central America . Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area he performed with different Latin bands including his own. In 1984 he relocated to Honolulu , Hawaii . In 1988 Rolando formed “SALSA HAWAII ” the islands Premiere International Latin Music Recording Group. He is a multiple winner of the Hawaii Music Awards and many other local, national and International awards. He has toured and performed in Japan , Korea , Guam, Tahiti , Canada , Nicaragua and the United States West Coast. After a number of CD’s as Rolando Sanchez & Salsa Hawaii , he is proud to present to you this brand new release. Mariel’s swimwear collection is designed with the collaboration of Argentinean designer, Marina Bornand. Together they’ve combined the sexy and sophisticated style of Argentina, with the fun and comfortable style of the U.S. Mariel flies to Argentina to oversee the production of the swimwear, from stringent testing prior to being introduced to the market, to the design and individual craftsmanship, handcrafted piece by piece with the finest Argentinean materials.
