Description
Keale returns to the Atherton, where he will present some traditional "oldies-but-goodies" and preview new compositions to be included on his soon to be release third CD. His first release, Kahikina, celebrates storied Kailua, the east-side of O`ahu and the rising sun. In Kawelona, his second CD, he again celebrates the sun with mele written for the long sunsets, and a tribute to Ni`ihau and her families. Keale's roots run deep, having been immersed in Ni`ihau family history, traditions and lore (he is nephew to Moe Keale and first cousin to Skippy and Iz Kamakawiwo`ole) since coming home to O`ahu 10 years ago. The current project's working title is ,`Āina Ka`ula, which refers to a very real, rocky islet off Ni`ihau, and also mystical islands that appear out of nowhere with the rising or setting of the Sun. "In their mystical form," says Keale, "they represent the summons from the spiritual Otherworld to make the journey from secular to sacred life." Keale is a storyteller who, through his musical compositions, seeks to honor-always and foremost-the ancestors or tūpuna, who have gone before and from whom he draws wisdom and strength.
