Description
Criterion: New Mixed Media Works by Calvin Collins August 6- October 23, 2012 Criterion is an exquisite selection of mixed-media artwork by Honolulu-based artist, Calvin Collins. This exhibition includes pieces that span several bodies of work. The exhibition highlights Collins' most recent body of work, entitled "Criterion," after the legendary film house of the same name. The works in this collection depict scenes and imagery from seminal films in the Criterion collection. Through Collins' displacement and reworkings of these various elements, the newly "recontextualized" scenes seek to evoke visceral emotional response in an anomalous manner. Collins' employment of low-brow, pedestrian, and often industrial media such as spray enamel, glitter, and resin produce a dubious alchemy that balances the overwrought, darker psychology of the imagery employed. The use of resin surfaces time and time again in Collins' work and is a material utilized for its seductive, versatile, and hermetic qualities. Collins studied painting at California College of the Arts, received his BFA in Painting/Studio Art from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA in Painting/Studio Art from UH Manoa. He works primarily in oil and mixed media and in recent years has ventured into the realms of collage and photography. His work is held in public and private collections and he has exhibited nationally. He currently teaches Fashion Design & Sketching at Honolulu Community College, instructs a portraiture class at the Honolulu Museum of Art School and is a lecturer in art/design at Kapiolani Community College.
