Tatoo Film Festival Opening: Skin Stories - with Chief (short)

About the Film:

Directed by Emiko Omori. USA, New Zealand, Samoa, 2003, 60 mins.

This film traces the roots of Pacific Islands tattoo traditions, from the Maori full-face moko, to the 2,000-year-old pe'a of Samoan chiefs. Tatau has been rescued from the brink of extinction by a new generation of artists committed to cultural survival.

Semu Fatutoa, a Honolulu taxi driver, was once a village chief in Samoa, but tragedy compelled him to cover his tattoos and flee his home. His life changes when a Hawaiian girl desperately needs his help.

General information: The Doris Duke Theatre opens its doors on Kinau Street one half-hour before each showing. Tickets for films may be purchased at the theater door on the day of screening, beginning one half-hour before each showing. Tickets can be purchased online in advance at www.honolulumuseum.tix.com

Admission: $10 adults; $8 museum members.

Parking: For weekday matinees, theater patrons may park in the lot behind the Honolulu Museum of Art School (entrance on makai side of Beretania) for $3 with theater validation. For evening screenings, you can park free at the museum's lot at 1035 Kinau St., Diamond Head of Victoria Street. Handicapped parking is available in the small Luce Pavilion lot on Victoria Street. Patrons using handicapped stalls should proceed to the main entrance on Kinau Street.

 

The Doris Duke Theatre is equipped with the Easy Listener Hearing Assistance System. You can pick up a receiver at the ticket counter.
